What makes Sahuaro Ranch Park distinctive

What makes Sahuaro Ranch Park distinctive

Sahuaro Ranch Park pairs a historic agricultural site with recreational facilities in Glendale. The historic area covers 17 acres and includes buildings, a rose garden, a barnyard and orchards.

William Henry Bartlett homesteaded the ranch in 1886, after the Arizona Canal was completed in 1885. By 1891, he controlled more than 2,000 acres of farmland near Glendale. The City of Glendale says Sahuaro Ranch is on the National Register of Historic Places.

That mix of history and open-air activities makes the park a useful non-event outing in Glendale. You can focus on the historic grounds, or combine a look at the ranch with time in the recreation areas.

Historic buildings and grounds

Historic buildings and grounds

The historic buildings at Sahuaro Ranch trace the growth of Bartlett’s ranch from its early years. The Main House was built in 1891 and is the focus of the City’s historic house tours.

The Guest House followed in 1898. Bartlett built it for his son Willie and his family; it was completed and furnished in 72 days, ready for their arrival on November 8, 1898. The Adobe House, designed by territorial architect James M. Creighton, was the ranch’s first permanent dwelling.

Set aside time to look at the buildings as part of a walk through the grounds. Tour arrangements can change, so check the official site before you go.

The City’s posted schedule describes Main House tours on Saturdays and Sundays from September through July, with tours every half hour. The Main House closes annually for all of August and the first weekend in September. Groups of 10 or more are asked to call 623-930-4201 for reservations.

The City’s school-tour schedule describes tours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from October through April, with advance booking required. Its page carries a notice that tours were not being scheduled at the time of that notice, so check the official site before making plans for a tour.

A route that includes downtown and the ranch appears in the one-day Glendale itinerary.

Gardens and outdoor areas

Gardens and outdoor areas

The ranch’s historic rose garden sits in front of the Main and Guest houses and dates to 1890. Elsewhere in the historic area, orchards and the barnyard add to the agricultural setting.

The park also has playgrounds, picnic tables and grills, a dog park, a four-field softball complex, soccer fields and four lighted sand volleyball courts. You can use picnic tables and grills near the playgrounds and volleyball court on a first-come, first-served basis.

For a group gathering, the picnic area has nine reservable covered ramadas. Each has nine tables, with seating for eight per table; six of the nine tables in each ramada are handicapped accessible. The City gives the combined capacity of the ramadas as 648 people.

Keep food and glass rules in mind while planning your visit: the City asks visitors not to feed the ranch animals, and its general park rules prohibit glass containers. Vehicles must use designated parking areas, overnight parking is prohibited, and motorized vehicles are limited to paved roads.
